Kimberly Trowbridge
"Self as Subject"
Many of Trowbridge’s recent paintings focus on the depiction of herself as an image. “Self-portraiture has been a vital source of meaning for me," Trowbridge says, "providing the opportunity to record, invent, elaborate and translate my experience. I see the picture plane as a mirror, it is the stage where I confront and articulate that which is unknown to me, and that which is necessary to see looking back at me.”
Trowbridge sources historical paintings, including the narrative paintings of the Renaissance and the formal language of Modernism. “I am very aware of the past and I see myself in relation to it. I use whatever information I find that is relevant to my present, personal practice; I translate it and use it as a means for investigating and developing my own language.”
She earned her MFA degree in Painting at the University of Washington in Seattle, and her BFA in Painting and BA in English Literature at Indiana University in Bloomington. She also studied Advanced Drawing in Florence, Italy and spent an academic year abroad at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England.
Her exhibitions include a solo show at Grey Gallery in Seattle, and numerous group exhibitions, including The Painting Center, NYC; Roots and Culture, Chicago; and Grey Gallery, Crawl Space Gallery, Ouch My Eye Gallery, Henry Art Gallery and the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, all in Seattle.
